Loch a Chaoriann

A proper mountain loch that demands respect - Loch a Chaoriann sits high in Argyll with views that justify the drive from Taynuilt. This isn't one of those tame, accessible lochs; it's a moody stretch of water ringed by steep slopes and serious Highland scenery. You'll find the main A85 runs alongside it, but get down to the water's edge and you're genuinely remote.

Walkers should plan half a day minimum. The shoreline paths reward patience - rocky banks, the occasional deer, and that particular silence you only get in the Scottish hills. On clear days, the reflections are striking enough to stop you mid-stride. It's not a lake for swimming or paddling unless you're well equipped; the water's cold and the banks are rugged. Fishing types often work this stretch, and if conditions are right, it's genuinely worthwhile.

What kills it slightly is the road noise when traffic picks up, though mornings are blissfully quiet. Come early or late in the day if you want atmosphere. Families with young kids might find it less engaging than places with facilities - there's nowhere to grab a coffee, and it's not a walk-around-the-shops kind of location.

Based out of Loch Awe Camping Pods, just five miles south, this makes a brilliant morning excursion before heading deeper into Argyll's park circuit.
