Loch a' Chaorainn

The water here sits absolutely still most mornings, mirror-flat and ringed by proper Highland scenery. Loch a' Chaorainn isn't the sort of place you'll find mobbed with tourists - that's rather the point. It's a quiet freshwater loch near Inveraray, the kind of spot locals know about and visitors stumble upon by accident while exploring Argyll.

What you get is straightforward: a remote loch, good for walking the shoreline, fishing if that's your thing, or simply sitting with a flask and watching the light change on the water. The surrounding landscape is classic Highlands - tree-lined banks, hills rising up, the whole scene feeling properly remote despite being only a few miles from Inveraray's more touristy attractions. Allow a couple of hours if you're planning to walk round it, longer if you're the type to just perch on a rock and decompress.

This works best for people after some genuine peace. Families might find it a bit sparse unless the kids are into nature-spotting. Walkers and photographers will absolutely rate it. There's no visitor infrastructure that I'm aware of, so bring what you need.

Stay at Fyne Glamping just four miles away and you've got proper comfort plus access to wild loch walks. Strathlachlan Caravan Park, slightly further out, sits on the edge of Loch Fyne itself, giving you two very different water experiences within a morning's drive. The loch pairs well with Inveraray's castle and town if you want to balance solitude with a bit of structure.
