Loanhead

A Bronze Age stone circle sits quietly on a hillside just outside Perth, easy to miss if you're not looking for it. Loanhead is the real deal - a proper archaeological site with standing stones that have been here for roughly 4,000 years, which puts things in perspective when you're standing among them.

What you get is a modest circle of weathered stones in an open field. It's not Stonehenge, and that's rather the point. There's no visitor centre, no crowds, no entrance fee. You just turn up and walk among them. The stones themselves aren't towering - some are barely waist-height - but there's something grounding about being in a space that ancient communities chose for ceremony or gathering.

Walkers and history types will get the most from a visit here. Allow half an hour maximum, longer if you're the sort to sit with it and think. Bring proper boots if the ground's wet; it can get boggy. The site works brilliantly as a half-hour detour between other Perthshire attractions rather than a destination in itself.

If you're caravan-based at Broadslap Farm or Greenhill Farm Glamping nearby, Loanhead makes an easy morning walk from Perth town centre. It's that rare thing - genuinely free, genuinely old, genuinely quiet. Kids under ten will likely lose interest fast, but older children with any curiosity about archaeology will find it compelling.
