Llyn Conach

Llyn Conach sits quietly in the Powys hills, a small reservoir that most visitors miss entirely on their way to bigger Welsh lakes. It's not dramatic - no soaring cliffs or fairy-tale islands - just a straightforward stretch of water backed by moorland and conifers. You can walk round it in under an hour, which means it's proper manageable for families with younger kids or anyone who doesn't fancy a serious hike.

The appeal here is simplicity. It's a solid spot for a picnic, some gentle birdwatching, or photography if the light's right. The walk itself is easy enough - mostly level ground with decent paths - and you get those big Mid Wales skies above you, which matter more than you'd think. The nearest town, Machynlleth, is close enough for supplies and coffee, which helps.

If you're based at Gwerniago Campsite just down the road, this makes an excellent morning outing before heading elsewhere. It won't eat up a whole day, but that's rather the point. Some people want waterfalls and drama; others just want a quiet reservoir and an hour's walk without faffing about. Llyn Conach does exactly what it says on the tin. Worth the detour if you're in the area for a few days, but don't shift your whole itinerary to see it.
