Llygad-yr-ŷch

The name means 'ox's eye' in Welsh, and once you're standing at Llygad-yr-ŷch, you'll understand why - it's a proper dark, circular lake that stares back at you from the moorland like something ancient and watchful. Located in Powys, this isn't a manicured tourist spot. It's raw moorland terrain, windswept and moody, with steep slopes tumbling down to black water that reflects nothing but sky and cloud.

Getting here requires effort. The walk from the nearest parking areas is genuinely steep in places, but walkers will find it rewarding - the isolation is complete, and views across Mid Wales stretch out for miles once you've climbed to the ridgeline. It's the sort of place that appeals to serious hikers rather than casual strollers. Kids might struggle with the exposed terrain and wind, though older ones who enjoy a proper ramble will be gripped by it.

There's no visitor infrastructure here - no café, no facilities. Bring waterproofs and snacks. Summer visits tend to be clearer, though autumn brings moody drama. The nearest town is Neath, which is frankly quite far away, making this a destination for those properly exploring the region rather than a quick stop-off.
