Llwyn-y-gog

Walk into Llwyn-y-gog and you're surrounded by proper Welsh woodland - the kind of place where the trees are old enough to have their own opinions. It's a forest near Machynlleth that doesn't shout about itself, which is exactly why it's worth the trip.

The main draw here is the walking. Paths wind through mixed woodland with enough tree cover to keep things cool on warmer days, and the sort of quiet that makes you realise how little of that exists anymore. There's a stream running through, which kids often find more interesting than any marked trail anyway. The forest isn't huge - you're looking at a couple of hours for a decent wander rather than a full day's outing - but it's dense enough that you feel properly in the woods rather than tramping around a manicured park.

This works best for families who don't need playground equipment and actual walkers who want some peace rather than Instagram moments. The terrain's manageable, nothing too steep, though muddy patches are guaranteed after rain. Spring's lovely when the bluebells come through, though you won't find the sort of carpet displays you get elsewhere.

It's free to visit and there's no formal infrastructure - just pull in, walk, and leave. For a holiday based at nearby Gwerniago Campsite, it's an easy detour before or after breakfast. Don't expect facilities or marked routes; just bring decent boots and maybe a map. It's the sort of forest that rewards turning up without expectations.
