Llanymynech Hill

The climb up Llanymynech Hill takes about twenty minutes if you're reasonably fit, and the effort pays off properly. You get views across the Tanat Valley and into Shropshire from the top - on a clear day you can see for miles, which isn't guaranteed in Mid Wales but worth banking on.

It's a straightforward walk rather than a scramble. The path is well-trodden and there's nothing technical about it, so families with older kids will manage without fuss. Younger children might find it a bit steep for the reward, though it's not a slog.

The hill itself has a working quarry on its flanks - you can't miss the industrial side of things - but that doesn't spoil the open moorland feel at the summit. The actual peak is low-key: no cafe, no facilities, just grass and views. Bring what you need with you.

If you're staying at Tanat Holiday Park just down the road, this makes an obvious morning outing. It's the sort of walk that clears the head without eating the whole day. Sweeney Farm Glamping and Fairhaven Camping are also close enough that you could easily slot it into a broader Powys itinerary. The town of Llanymynech itself is small - you won't spend long there - but the hill justifies a detour if you're walking the wider area. Access is free and open. Go early if the weather looks promising; cloud rolls in fast around here.
