Llanwern Golf Club

You'll find Llanwern Golf Club just outside Chepstow, a proper 18-hole course that sits on decent parkland - the sort of place where you actually want to play rather than just tick it off. The layout winds through mature trees with enough water hazards to keep you honest, and the greens are well-maintained even if the course isn't as famous as some of its Welsh neighbours.

This is unmistakably a members' club first, visitors second. If you're a keen golfer staying at one of the local parks - Penhein Glamping is within easy reach about six miles away - it's worth ringing ahead to see if you can get a game. The course plays to around 6,400 yards depending on which tees you fancy, so it's not a beast but you'll need a decent swing to score well. Expect to spend three and a half to four hours on the course.

The real appeal here is that it's not trying to be something it isn't. You get a solid round in a quiet corner of Monmouthshire without the faffing about you'd encounter at some of the more touristy destinations. The views are fine rather than spectacular - this is working countryside, not Instagram material.

Not one for non-golfers, obviously. If your holiday group splits between players and non-players, Chepstow itself has enough to keep the latter occupied - the castle's worth a look, and there's decent walking along the Wye. For golfers, though, a quick call to the clubhouse could well be worth your time.
