Liveoaks Grove

The ancient oaks here are proper giants. Some have been standing for centuries, their gnarled trunks wider than a person is tall, and walking beneath that cathedral of branches feels like stepping back in time. Liveoaks Grove sits just outside Lydney in Monmouthshire, and it's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - rare enough these days.

What you get is a walk through old-growth woodland where the light filters through in dappled patches. There's no visitor centre or cafe, no heritage interpretation boards explaining every inch. It's just trees, paths, and quiet. That's either brilliant or boring depending on what you want from an afternoon.

Historically minded types will appreciate the age of the place; walkers will enjoy the gentle rambles through the forest. It's not a destination that'll eat up hours - budget a couple of hours maximum, really. Kids under about eight might lose interest fairly quickly unless they're keen on building dens and spotting birds. Go in autumn when the light's that particular golden colour and the floor's carpeted in leaves.
