A proper woodland walk through old oak woodland just outside Lydney - this is the sort of place that rewards you for leaving your phone in the car. The trees here are genuinely ancient, gnarled things that make you understand why people used to think forests were full of magic. The paths wind through dense canopy, so even on a scorcher of a day you're walking in cool, dappled shade. It's not dramatic or showy. There are no viewpoints with Instagram moments waiting at the top. Instead you get the sound of birds, the smell of damp earth, and the very real sense of stepping back in time.

Walkers will get the most from this - it's the kind of place where you potter about for an hour or so, finding your own pace. Kids who are into nature spotting might find it interesting; those expecting a theme park will be bored within minutes. The woodland floor changes through seasons, which makes it worth returning to if you're camping locally.

Liveoaks Brake works well alongside a Forest of Dean trip - it's got that same old-growth forest feeling but without the crowds. If you're staying at Penhein Glamping five miles away, it's a decent morning walk before heading elsewhere. Allow an hour minimum, longer if you're the type to stop and investigate fungi or sit on logs. No facilities that I could find, so bring water. The lack of signage means it feels genuinely wild rather than managed.
