Littleborough Chapel

A small whitewashed chapel sits quietly on the edge of Littleborough, just a few miles south of Crediton. It's the sort of place you could drive past without noticing, which is precisely why it's worth seeking out. The chapel itself dates back centuries and still functions as a working place of worship, despite its modest size and remote setting.

The interior is simple and unpretentious - wooden pews, plain walls, and that particular quality of light you only find in old country churches. There's nothing grand about it, and that's rather the point. If you're after architectural drama, look elsewhere. But if you want to understand how rural communities actually worshipped, this is far more honest than the cathedral tourist circuit.

It works best as a brief stop during a broader walk around the Devon countryside rather than a destination in itself. The surrounding lanes are lovely for rambling, and Crediton itself - a proper market town with decent shops and a church of its own - is close enough for a combined visit. Families with young kids might find it dull after five minutes, unless they're the type who enjoy hunting through old graveyards.

Go early on a weekday if you want peace and quiet. Don't expect facilities - there's nothing here but the chapel itself and the landscape around it.
