Little Wood

The forest floor here is thick with moss and last season's leaves, the kind of place where you actually want to slow down. Little Wood sits just outside Wareham, a proper slice of Dorset woodland that feels worlds away from the busy high street. It's modest in size but dense enough that you can properly lose yourself for an hour or two without feeling like you've walked the same path twice.

You'll find yourself weaving between oak and beech trees, with the occasional clearing where light floods through. There are no big dramatic viewpoints or visitor facilities to speak of - this is genuine woodland walking, not a tourist attraction with a car park and a cafe. Bring decent boots because it gets boggy in places, especially after rain. The paths are reasonably marked but this isn't a manicured nature reserve, so pay attention.

Walkers will get the most from it, particularly those who enjoy a quiet amble without the crowds you'd find at bigger Dorset attractions. Families with older kids who don't need constant entertainment will be fine here; younger ones might lose interest after twenty minutes. It's the sort of place you visit on a damp autumn morning when you want to breathe fresh air and listen to things that aren't engines.
