Little Weighton Recreation Ground

The path into Little Weighton Recreation Ground is unremarkable at first - just a modest entrance off the lanes near Beverley - but spend twenty minutes wandering and you'll understand why locals keep coming back. It's a proper nature reserve, the sort of place where you actually see things: kingfishers if you're lucky, certainly dragonflies in summer, and enough wildflowers to make a botanist weep.

The ground itself is fairly intimate. You're not trekking miles here - more like a series of connected loops through meadowland and alongside water features, all thoroughly manageable even with smaller children in tow. The walking is gentle, flat mostly, which means you can focus on what's actually happening around you rather than watching your footing.

It works best in late spring through early autumn when the reserve is properly alive. Winter's bleaker, though birders won't mind it. Allow an hour if you're just pottering, two if you actually sit and watch things. Free entry, naturally.

If you're based at Willow Pond Caravan Site or Little Wold Away Glamping - both within easy reach - this makes a lovely morning out without the drive stress of bigger attractions. It's not going to hold teenagers' attention for long, and Instagram-ready vistas aren't really the point. But for families after a quiet country walk where something interesting might actually happen, it's well worth the short trip from Beverley.
