Little Trees Hill

The highest point in Cambridgeshire isn't exactly an Alpine adventure. Little Trees Hill rises to 128 metres, which is to say it barely counts as a hill at all if you're coming from anywhere with actual topography. That said, if you're camped near Cambridge and fancy a walk with a genuine sense of accomplishment, it'll do the job.

You get a proper 360-degree view across the Fens from the top - flat, agricultural, relentlessly green. On a clear day you can pick out the spires of Cambridge to the west. The surrounding area is pleasant enough for a ramble, with footpaths threading through farmland and the occasional tree-lined bit to break up the monotony. It's the sort of place where you notice the sky more than anything else.

Truth is, this works best as part of a broader walk rather than a destination in itself. Spend forty minutes getting up, ten minutes looking about, then head back down. Kids won't be bored exactly, but they won't be blown away either. History buffs and fell-walkers should probably look elsewhere. The appeal is modest and honest - a straightforward local walk with a mild sense of having conquered something.

Free to visit, obviously. It's open access, accessible year-round. If you're staying at one of the caravan sites near Cambridge - Cherry Hinton is closest at 1.8 miles, or the Caravanning Club Site at 2.2 - it makes a decent leg-stretcher before heading into the city proper.
