Little Millhole Wood

You'll find Little Millhole Wood just outside Heathfield, a proper quiet pocket of Sussex woodland that doesn't announce itself much but rewards a visit. It's the sort of place locals know about and visitors miss, which makes it rather good for anyone after a bit of peace away from the busier parks and gardens dotted round the region.

The woodland itself is fairly dense with mature trees - plenty of shade, which is lovely on a warm day. There are paths threading through, though they're not always marked with military precision, so come ready to potter rather than power-walk. You might spot bluebells in spring if you time it right. It's the kind of forest where you remember why walking through trees feels better than walking on pavements.

This is genuinely a walkers' spot. Kids will get a decent hour or so out of it, maybe more if they're into looking for wildlife, but it's not the sort of woodland with adventure playgrounds or visitor facilities. There's no café, no gift shop, no fees as far as anyone can tell - you just turn up and have a walk. Free admission, free parking, free quiet.

If you're staying at Hopgarden Glamping nearby, Little Millhole is close enough for a morning wander before heading to one of Sussex's better-known attractions. It works as a palate cleanser between proper days out rather than a destination in itself. Real trees, real paths, no faffing about.
