Little Hill

Little Hill rises out of the moorland near Lochwinnoch with all the understated drama you'd expect from a Scottish Lowland peak. It's not dramatic - no sharp ridges or scrambles - but the walk up rewards you with proper views across the Clyde Valley and towards the Southern Uplands. Allow around two hours for a gentle circuit from the village, which gives you time to take in the landscape without rushing.

The moorland approach is straightforward enough. Paths wind through heather and grass with the occasional rocky outcrop keeping things interesting. You're looking at a modest 400-odd metres of elevation, so families with older kids will manage fine, though younger ones might find it a bit of a drag without much to break up the walk. The views from the top aren't jaw-dropping but they're genuine - rolling hills, distant peaks, and on a clear day you can pick out the higher mountains beyond.

This is walker territory really. You come here for the route rather than a single showstopping vista, and if that appeals to you, it's well worth the detour from Lochwinnoch. Combine it with exploring the surrounding moorland or a visit to Castle Semple Loch nearby. The Pods at Auchenhean sits just a few miles away, making it easy to base yourself there and tackle Little Hill as part of a broader walking weekend across the Renfrewshire hills. Go when the light is good - midday can flatten the moorland colours.
