Little Green Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Peterborough, Little Green Wood is the sort of place you'll drive past without noticing unless someone tips you off. It's small - the name doesn't lie - but dense enough to feel properly remote even when you're only a few miles from town.

What you get is straightforward: woodland paths that meander through native trees, plenty of shade, and that lovely muffled quiet you only find under a good canopy. Dog walkers love it. Families with younger kids find an hour here fills a rainy afternoon without the fuss of somewhere bigger. Birdwatchers occasionally report decent spotting, though you'll want to come early for the best of it.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, just access and trees. Bring boots in winter - parts get boggy. It's free, and you can park nearby without hassle. Most people allow 45 minutes to an hour, though you could stretch it if you're the slow-rambling type.

It works well if you're based at Brightside Caravan Park or Northfield Farm and fancy getting out for a walk that doesn't demand a long drive. You won't remember it as the trip highlight, but it's exactly what you need when you want fresh air without the National Trust crowds. Realistic expectation: it's a decent local wood, not a destination in itself.
