Little Germany

The German prisoners of war who ended up in Cambridgeshire during the Second World War left behind something quite unexpected - a whole village of their own making. Little Germany, just outside Cambridge, is what remains of a POW camp where around 4,000 men were held, and they didn't just sit idle. They built proper structures, created a functioning community, even decorated their quarters with murals and carvings that somehow survived decades of neglect.

Walking around the site now, you'll see the actual huts and buildings where prisoners lived and worked. It's genuinely moving - the scale of it hits you. You can still make out German words carved into doorframes, spots where men tried to make sense of captivity by creating something. The site feels less touristy than many heritage attractions, which is part of its appeal.

History enthusiasts will find this absolutely gripping. Families with older kids get plenty to discuss - it's a tangible connection to wartime rather than just reading about it. You don't need more than an hour or two here unless you're really into the era. The nearest town Cambridge is within easy reach, making it a sensible addition to any Cambridgeshire trip.
