Little Durnford Hill

The walk up Little Durnford Hill takes about twenty minutes from the car park, and you'll find yourself on a proper chalk downland ridge with views that stretch across the Wiltshire plains towards Salisbury. It's not dramatically high - you're looking at around 600 feet - but what it lacks in altitude it makes up for with the sense of openness and the way the cathedral spire pins itself to the horizon on a clear day.

What draws people here is straightforward: a decent leg-stretch with a genuine payoff. The path is well-maintained, mostly chalk and grass underfoot, and the route works equally well as a quick forty-minute there-and-back for families or as part of a longer ramble through the downland. You'll spot plenty of walkers with their dogs, and it's the kind of place where you can understand why people move to Wiltshire rather than just pass through it.

The nearest caravan options are solid. Salisbury Camping and Caravanning Club Site sits just 1.8 miles away with a reliable 4.8 rating, making it your best bet for parking up and heading straight out. Coombe and Bake Farm are both under five miles south, though they're less of a guaranteed shoe-in. There's no charge that I'm aware of, no facilities on the hill itself, and you can do it any time of year - though late spring and early autumn tend to draw fewer crowds than summer weekends. Worth doing if you're based in Salisbury, particularly if the weather's on your side.
