Litchard Playing Fields sits just inland from Porthcawl, a proper working landscape rather than a manicured nature reserve. You're looking at grassland and scattered woodland where local wildlife actually lives rather than being gawped at through hides. It's the sort of place where you go for a walk and might see something interesting rather than somewhere you go specifically to tick a box.

The fields work best if you're staying at Trecco Bay Holiday Park - it's only five miles away and offers a proper break from the caravan site without needing to drive far. Families with young kids will have an okay time here on clear days; there's room to run about and the terrain is flat enough that pushchairs won't become an ordeal. Serious nature lovers might find it a bit low-key compared to coastal reserves further west, but that's partly the point. You get genuine countryside without the crowds.

Timing-wise, bring a decent pair of boots if it's been wet - the ground holds water. Spring and early summer are your best bets for spotting birds and insects. Allow an hour or so for a proper explore; it's not enormous but it's not a ten-minute loop either. The real value here is as a half-day walk that breaks up a week at the seaside without becoming another tourist destination. It's genuine rather than glossy, which matters more than you'd think when you're on holiday.
