Lion Gorge Lake

The water here is surprisingly clear for Essex, ringed by low banks and patches of scrubby woodland that feel quietly removed from the industrial sprawl around Tilbury. Lion Gorge Lake is a modest affair - you won't be swimming across it in ten minutes - but it's the kind of place that works because it doesn't try too hard.

It's primarily a fishing spot, which means calm mornings and a scattering of anglers along the banks. Walkers use it too, though the path around the perimeter isn't dramatic. If you're expecting gorge drama you'll be disappointed; the name oversells the geology. What you get instead is a genuine local retreat, proper flat terrain, and the occasional kingfisher if you're patient. Good for a gentle circuit, better still if you've brought binoculars.

Families with small children might find an hour's loop enough before boredom sets in. Teenagers who fish will be far keener. The lake is free to access, though parking details worth checking locally. Spring and early autumn are best - less chance of it being crowded with weekend crowds, though it's rarely mobbed anyway.
