Linton Zoo Conservation Park

The big cats here are what grab you first - proper impressive animals that make you realise just how small a regular human actually is. Linton Zoo sits about fifteen miles east of Cambridge, and it's the sort of place where you'll spend a solid three to four hours if you're thorough, maybe half that if the kids get restless.

It's a conservation-focused operation, not just a glorified petting farm. You'll see big cats, primates, and plenty of other species scattered across the grounds. The layout means proper walking - wear decent shoes. It's free entry, which makes it excellent value if you're basing yourself nearby, though parking can get tight on school holidays.

Families with younger kids tend to have the best time here, though teenagers who are into wildlife photography will find decent subjects. There's genuinely educational stuff happening throughout the day, not just animals standing about looking bored. The staff actually know their stuff.

If you're staying at somewhere like HappenOak Treehouse just up the road, this makes an easy morning or afternoon outing. It's not earth-shattering - don't expect London Zoo scale - but for a Cambridgeshire day out with the family, it's solid. The conservation angle gives it more substance than most small British zoos manage. Weather dependent, obviously. A rainy day here isn't brilliant fun.
