Links Golf Club

The Links Golf Club sits just outside Newmarket, and if you're after a round on a proper course, this is where locals head. It's an 18-hole layout that doesn't pretend to be links-land proper - flat Cambridgeshire terrain means you're playing on parkland rather than windswept dunes - but the course itself is well-maintained and genuinely interesting to play.

You'll need to be a member or have an introduction from one to get on, which rules out casual visitors turning up on the day. That said, if you're staying at Piggles Retreat nearby and you golf, it's worth ringing ahead to see what they can arrange. The course works best for golfers aged mid-teens up - kids learning the game might find 18 holes a slog, but competent juniors will enjoy it.

Allow three to four hours for a round, longer if you're not quick between shots. Green fees aren't published online, so you'll need to contact the club directly for current rates and visitor policies.

Honestly, it's a solid but unremarkable course. Nothing wrong with that - plenty of golfers prefer straightforward play without the scramble of a championship track. The real appeal is if you're staying locally and want a decent game without driving into Norfolk or Lincolnshire. On its own, it's not worth travelling far for, but as part of a golfing weekend based around Newmarket, it fits the bill.
