Linford Barrows

Three Bronze Age burial mounds sit quietly on farmland near Ballymena, looking rather less dramatic than you might expect for something over 4,000 years old. The barrows themselves are grass-covered humps - not exactly towering monuments, but there's something genuinely moving about standing where Neolithic people decided this hilltop mattered enough to bury their dead here.

It's a walker's stop rather than a destination in itself. You'll spend twenty minutes here maximum, poking about the earthworks and trying to imagine what the landscape looked like when these were freshly constructed. The views across Mid and East Antrim are decent, rolling countryside rather than dramatic, and on a clear day you can see proper distance.

History types will get more from it than anyone else. The site requires a bit of archaeological imagination - there are no reconstructions or visitor facilities, just the mounds and a sense of deep time. Families might find it underwhelming unless the kids are genuinely into archaeology; it's not a place that keeps you occupied for hours.

Free to visit, as far as anyone can tell, with no set hours - you just turn up. If you're based at Ocean View Pods nearby, it's worth a morning walk to break up a holiday. Combine it with exploring Ballymena itself or other Bronze Age sites in the region. Don't go out of your way specially, but if you're in the area and fancy a bit of genuine prehistory without the crowds, it's worth the detour.
