Limekiln Plantation

The woodland at Limekiln Plantation spreads across a decent chunk of Gloucestershire near Cheltenham, and it's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick lap. The trees are mature and well-established - oak, beech, a mix that's typical of Cotswold edges - and the canopy's thick enough to keep things cool even on warm afternoons.

Walkers will find this genuinely worthwhile. The terrain's forgiving without being dull, and there's enough space to lose the crowds if you time it right. A couple of hours is realistic if you're ambling through without rushing, though you could knock it over in 45 minutes if you're just passing through. The paths are reasonably clear, though winter can get muddy depending on recent rain.

Historically it's interesting too - the name hints at industrial past, and you'll spot evidence of old lime workings if you look about. Not a playground, mind. This isn't somewhere to drag reluctant kids expecting amusement; it's genuinely for people who like trees and quiet.

If you're based at Bourton-on-the-Water Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just 1.5 miles away, it's an obvious addition to your day. Close enough for a morning stroll without any faffing about with travel. Cotswolds Meadow Glamping is further out at six miles, but still perfectly manageable for a half-day walk if the weather's decent.
