Lighthouse Church

The white tower rises from the New Forest edge like something out of a Victorian novel - Lighthouse Church is genuinely odd in the best way. Built in the 1830s near Southampton, it's a working church designed to look like a lighthouse, complete with a beacon room at the top. The architect was absolutely serious about it too. Inside, the circular nave is intimate rather than grand, and the light floods in through tall windows that actually feel intentional rather than just functional.

You'll walk around thinking about the practicality of it all - how hymns must echo in here differently, whether the beacon actually works, why someone thought a seaside church in the middle of Hampshire made perfect sense. It's worth stopping by if you're already exploring the New Forest or staying at nearby Lepe Beach Campsite, though don't expect an hour-long visit. Twenty minutes covers it properly, unless you're the type who reads every brass plaque.

Historically minded visitors will find it genuinely interesting - it's a proper eccentric piece of Victorian architecture, not a cynical recreation. The setting is peaceful without being dramatic. It won't blow your mind, but it's the sort of thing that sticks with you because it's so deliberately, unapologetically weird. If you're in the area with a caravan, it makes a decent detour on the way to somewhere else rather than a destination in itself.
