Liddell Park

The woodland around Liddell Park in Aberdeenshire feels properly remote, even though Cookney is just down the road. It's a nature reserve where you'll find yourself among mature trees, birdsong, and the kind of quiet that actually makes your ears adjust. The paths wind through mixed woodland - mostly Scots pine and broadleaf - and if you time it right with early morning walks, you'll spot roe deer and wood pigeons without much fuss.

This isn't a manicured visitor attraction with tea rooms and explanation boards. It's the real thing - a working nature reserve where the point is to slow down and actually look at what's around you. Birdwatchers absolutely rate it, and families with kids old enough to manage muddy paths will find it far more engaging than watching them scroll their phones on a grey Scottish afternoon. You could easily spend two hours here without rushing, or duck in for forty minutes if you're between other stops.

The nearest proper base is Stonehaven, about four miles south, where the Queen Elizabeth Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite offers solid five-star reviews and proper facilities. From there, Liddell Park works as a morning activity before exploring the wider Aberdeenshire coastline. Free access, no gates, no faffing about - just show up with decent walking boots and respect the land. Best visited between May and September when the woodland is thick and the weather's less likely to make you regret leaving the caravan.
