Leyburn Shawl

The Leyburn Shawl is a proper ribbon of a footpath that loops around the edge of Wensleydale, offering what locals reckon is one of the best walks in the Yorkshire Dales without breaking a sweat. It's roughly two miles of riverside wandering that takes you along the banks of the River Ure, with the market town of Leyburn spread out below on one side and limestone cliffs rising up the other.

What makes it work is the sheer ease of it. The path itself is well-maintained and largely flat, which means families with younger legs won't start complaining after twenty minutes. Most people clock it in around forty-five minutes to an hour, depending on how often you stop to gawp at the view or mess about by the river. Spring and early summer are when it really sings - the banks come alive with wildflowers and the Wensleydale light hits differently.

You'll get the most from this if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Yorkshire Dales Holiday Park, just a mile away, or Eastfield Glamping Farm slightly further out. It's the sort of walk that bridges the gap between "we need some fresh air" and "we don't want to spend all day hiking." Park up in Leyburn itself, grab a coffee from one of the cafes there, then head out. Free to walk, naturally. Don't expect drama or isolation - it's popular for good reason - but it's worth your time if you're in the area.
