Leyburgh Wood

The woodland around Leyburgh, just outside Cockermouth, is proper walking territory. Ancient deciduous trees, a network of trails that actually lead somewhere, and the kind of quietness you don't get near busy attractions. This isn't a theme park with marked viewpoints - it's a working forest where you navigate yourself, which means you either love that freedom or find it a bit aimless.

Walkers will get the most from it. The terrain's gentle enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might struggle with the lack of obvious "wow" moments. You're looking at anything from a half-hour stroll to a couple of hours depending on how deep you want to go. The forest floor can be wet and muddy - I'd not recommend it the day after heavy rain unless you're properly equipped.

The real appeal is the proximity to Cockermouth itself, which means you can combine this with the town's proper attractions if the weather turns. It's also genuinely convenient for the nearby campsites - Whinfell Hall Farm Campsite is barely a ten-minute drive away, and Castle Guards Farm Retreat even closer for the fancier glamping crowd. Neither will charge you to wander the forest itself, so it's a handy way to add a morning's activity to a Cumbrian park holiday without extra expense.

Go when the canopy's properly green - spring through early autumn - rather than in winter when it's just mud and bare branches.
