Leighterton Spinney

A small but proper woodland tucked away near Stroud, Leighterton Spinney is the sort of place you wander into half by accident and find yourself staying longer than planned. It's not vast - you're not talking about getting lost for hours - but the trees are mature and thick enough to feel genuinely separate from the surrounding Wiltshire countryside.

The main appeal here is straightforward: a decent woodland walk without fuss or crowds. Dog walkers seem to be the main clientele, and you'll see why. The paths are manageable, the shade is welcome in summer, and there's something about walking through older trees that clears the head fast. In autumn the leaf cover is excellent. Spring brings bluebells, though you'll want to time it right.

This works brilliantly as a half-day addition to a park holiday rather than a destination in itself.
