Legbourne Wood

Ancient woodland just outside Louth that feels properly removed from the everyday - narrow paths wind through established oak and ash, and on a damp morning the whole place has that soft, quiet quality you only get in old forests. It's managed by Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, which means it's taken seriously as a habitat rather than just landscaped into submission.

The wood itself isn't massive, so you're not talking a full day here - a solid hour or ninety minutes and you've covered the main paths. What makes it worthwhile is the wildlife: keep eyes open for roe deer if you're early, and the bird life is decent year-round. Spring's the obvious time, when bluebells carpet the floor and everything's loud with nesting birds, but winter's oddly brilliant if you want solitude and the bare trees let you see the structure of the place.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit limited - there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, and the paths are just woodland trails, nothing engineered for pushchairs. Walkers and serious birdwatchers will get more from it. It's free to visit and managed as a proper nature reserve, so no tacky additions.
