The drive into Lees Hall Golf Club near Dronfield takes you through proper Yorkshire countryside - rolling greens and proper old-money clubhouse vibes. It's an 18-hole course that's been here since 1907, which means the layout has character rather than the cookie-cutter feel of newer clubs.

You'll need to be a member or have an arranged guest round to play, which is worth knowing upfront. The course itself winds through woodland with enough elevation changes to keep things interesting without becoming ridiculous. Fairways are well-maintained, and there's genuine challenge here - not a push-around course.

This is squarely for golfers, obviously. Families without players won't find much to do beyond dropping someone off. Handicappers and club members from nearby will get genuine value; it's a solid test of golf without the pretension of some private courses.

If you're staying at Rother Valley Country Park just down the road, or camping at Waleswood, and one of your party golfs, it's worth a day trip. The club's website will tell you about membership rates and guest fees - worth ringing ahead rather than turning up hoping. Allow four hours for a round plus a drink after if the club's bar is your thing.
