Leaplish Waterside Park

The water laps right up to the shore at Leaplish, and that's rather the point of coming here. It's a proper waterside park on the edge of Kielder Water in Northumberland, about twenty minutes from Hexham, where you can actually get on the water rather than just stare at it from a distance. Kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing - the usual water sports are all on offer, and the facilities are decent enough that families don't feel like they're roughing it.

Walkers will find themselves in their element. The trails around here connect to the wider Kielder Water loop, so you can do anything from a gentle twenty-minute amble to a proper half-day hike. The water views don't get old, even on a grey Northumberland afternoon. What struck me most was how uncommercial it all feels - there's none of that forced theme-park energy. Just people doing their thing by a large body of water.
