Lawns Hill

The walk up Lawns Hill from Northallerton takes you through proper Yorkshire moorland - gorse-covered slopes that turn gold in late summer, with views that stretch right across the Vale of Mowbray. It's not a dramatic peak by any measure, but that's rather the point. No crowds, no visitor centre nonsense, just rolling countryside and the kind of quiet you don't get often enough.

You're looking at maybe forty minutes to the top if you're walking at a decent pace, less if you're racing. The paths are well-worn but muddy after rain, so decent boots matter. Once you're up there, the views south are genuinely good - on a clear day you can pick out features miles away. The fell itself is just open moorland with low vegetation, so there's nowhere to hide if the weather turns, which it does regularly up here.

Families with kids will manage it fine, though younger legs might need a rest halfway. Walkers based at Whorlton Pods - five miles south towards Osmotherley - couldn't ask for easier access to something genuinely worth the effort. It's the sort of walk that teaches you what Yorkshire moorland actually feels like without requiring proper hiking credentials.

Free, obviously. No facilities at the top. Go when the light's decent rather than fighting the mist on a grey afternoon. The real gift here is that it's not Instagram-famous, which means you might actually have the place to yourself.
