Lawless Coppice is a working woodland just outside Dorchester where the paths wind through dense beech and oak, and the whole place has that managed wildness you get in old English forests. Walkers will find this genuinely rewarding - the canopy is thick enough that even on roasting days it stays cool, and there's proper forest smell. Kids won't get bored if they're into exploring (fallen logs, forest floor creatures, that sort of thing), though it's not a playground destination. You'll need decent footwear after rain; the paths get squelchy. Allow two hours for a proper amble, or an hour if you just want the highlights.

The admission situation isn't entirely clear from the usual sources, so ring ahead or check locally when you arrive in Dorchester. The woodland works as an excellent half-day addition to a longer Dorset itinerary - pair it with a stay at somewhere like Green Valley Yurts and Cabin nearby and you've got yourself a proper countryside base. The beauty of Lawless Coppice is it doesn't feel precious or over-managed. It's a working wood where you're genuinely walking through something useful, not just a manicured tourist track.
