Law Hill

Law Hill rises abruptly from the flat countryside south of Lochwinnoch, a proper wee peak that rewards a decent walk with views across Renfrewshire that stretch for miles. The climb itself isn't brutal - maybe forty minutes if you're moving at a steady pace - but it's steep enough in places that you'll feel you've earned the summit. On a clear day you can pick out the Clyde valley and the distant heights beyond. The path is straightforward, well-trodden, and navigable year-round, though boggy after heavy rain. There's a trig point at the top, the sort of thing that appeals to serious walkers and casual hikers alike. Most folk allow an hour and a half for the return trip, which gives you time to sit about catching your breath and taking in the panorama. Families with kids aged eight and up will manage it fine, though younger ones might find it a slog. If you're staying at The Pods at Auchenhean just down the road - a superb spot, that - Law Hill makes an excellent morning outing before lunch. It's free, naturally, and there's no faffing about with opening hours or admission fees. The walk takes you through proper Lowland countryside, nothing dramatic but honest and green. Don't expect crowds. People tend to overlook it in favour of bigger-name peaks, which suits those of us who prefer our hilltops without the queues.
