Larkhill Vineyard

The Cotswolds aren't short of vineyards, but Larkhill stands out because it actually feels like someone's pet project rather than a corporate operation. You're looking at English wine in the proper sense - the kind where you taste what the terroir and the weather have actually done, not what marketing wants you to think happened.

Larkhill sits just outside Stroud, that proper arts and crafts hub where the local economy runs on cheese makers and furniture designers. The vineyard itself occupies a decent chunk of south-facing slope, which matters more than people realise for English viticulture. Visit during growing season and the vines are the main event - in late summer the fruit hangs heavy and the whole place smells of earth and ambition.

Tastes and tours happen regularly but call ahead to check what's on when you visit. Most people spend two to three hours here if they're doing a tasting properly - rushed tastings are pointless. Bring a proper appetite if you're thinking food, though that depends on what they've got running on the day.

If you're camping at Tobacconist Farm or the glamping setups nearby, Larkhill makes a cracking afternoon diversion. It's close enough that you're not chewing up half your holiday in the car, but far enough that it feels like an actual trip. Not one for the "visit as many attractions as possible" crowd - this is about sitting still and tasting something decent.
