Larkhall Congregational Church

This red sandstone church sits bang in the middle of Larkhall, just a few miles south of Lanark, and it's one of those Victorian buildings that stops you mid-stride. Built in 1884, it's all Gothic Revival arches and that warm ginger-coloured stone that catches the light properly on a clear day. The interior's worth a look if you can get in - ornate plasterwork and the sort of stained glass that makes you squint upwards like a tourist despite your best efforts.

It's not a destination in itself, frankly. You won't spend more than twenty minutes inside unless you're seriously into ecclesiastical architecture. But if you're pottering around South Lanarkshire - perhaps staying at Ecosse Glamping just down the road - it's an easy detour that breaks up the day between bigger attractions. The church sits in the town centre, so you can grab a coffee and have a wander around Larkhall's local shops at the same time.

Historically minded types will appreciate the craftsmanship. Kids will find it dull unless they're the sort who actually enjoy old buildings. Walkers using it as a stopping point between longer treks would find it convenient enough. Your best bet is ringing ahead or checking if there are posted visiting times - many Scottish churches operate limited hours these days, and you don't want a wasted journey.
