Langold Country Park

You won't find much in the way of tourist hype around Langold Country Park, and that's precisely why it works. This former colliery site near Worksop has been transformed into something genuinely useful - a proper country park with lakes, woodland walks, and enough space to actually breathe without bumping into someone else's pushchair.

The main draw is the water. Two lakes sit at the heart of it, and they're genuinely pretty in that understated way. You can walk the perimeter, spot waterfowl, maybe catch a glimpse of kingfishers if you're lucky. The woodland paths are well-trodden but not crowded, winding through mature trees that feel like actual forest rather than landscaped parks in disguise. There's a decent network of trails ranging from a gentle loop to something that'll tire out the kids properly.

Families get the most from this spot. It's free, which helps when you're on a caravan holiday at Riverside Caravan Park just down the road. Children can burn energy without you shelling out an entry fee. Walkers will find it solid rather than spectacular - nothing dramatic, but honest. Don't expect adventure playgrounds or fancy facilities; this is old-school park management, which means it's refreshingly underdeveloped.

Go early on a weekday if you can. Weekends bring the usual crowds, and the car park fills up. Allow two to three hours for a proper walk. The best light is morning, when mist occasionally sits across the water.
