Langley Dam

The water here is unnervingly still on a calm day, dark and deep, reflecting the Northumberland hills like a black mirror. Langley Dam sits just outside Hexham, a proper working reservoir that's been quietly doing its job since Victorian times while walkers have gradually caught on to how good it is.

You're looking at a straightforward loop walk around the perimeter - takes most people two to three hours at an easy pace, longer if you stop to photograph things. The path is well-trodden and mostly flat, which means families with decent-sized kids can manage it without complaint. The real draw isn't some dramatic peak or ruined castle; it's the combination of water, woodland, and the kind of peace you don't often find this close to civilization. Herons fish in the shallows. In autumn the larches turn gold and drop straight into the reservoir.

Free to walk around, obviously. No facilities to speak of, so bring a packed lunch if you're staying the day. Don't come expecting dramatic scenery - this is subtle landscape, the kind that grows on you rather than knocking you sideways. Better in spring and autumn than high summer when it gets a bit muggy. Winter can be bleak and gorgeous in equal measure.

Stay at Langley Dam Glamping just down the road and you're practically on top of it - wake up and you're there. Panoramic Pods, a few miles out, gives you a slightly wider base for exploring the Tyne Valley. Either way, this works best as the quiet half of a Northumberland trip, something restorative between more ambitious days out.
