Lanark Loch

The loch itself is modest - a freshwater stretch hemmed in by woodland that doesn't photograph as dramatically as you might hope. But that's rather the point. This is a proper working nature reserve, not a tourist attraction dressed up in fancy signage.

The walk around it takes about an hour at a leisurely pace, following paths that wind through mixed woodland where you'll spot mallards, herons if you're lucky, and plenty of woodland birds if you time it right. Spring and early summer are best - the rhododendrons put on a decent show, and that's when the birdwatching gets interesting. Winter can feel a bit bleak and muddy, though quieter.

It's ideal for families with children who can manage a steady walk without needing constant entertainment. Older kids might enjoy the bird identification challenge; younger ones will get restless after forty minutes. Dog walkers will find it pleasant enough, though the paths narrow in places. For serious ornithologists, this rewards patience and binoculars.

Lanark town is just down the road, so you can pair this with exploring the Falls of Clyde or grabbing lunch. If you're based at Ecosse Glamping nearby, it's an easy morning outing. Free access, naturally. Bring proper boots if it's been wet - the paths don't drain well. It's not spectacular, but it's a genuine bit of South Lanarkshire's countryside without the crowds.
