Lamp Acre

Ancient woodland doesn't get much better than Lamp Acre, a proper slice of old-growth forest just outside Cheltenham that feels genuinely removed from the world despite being five minutes from town. You're walking through thick beech and oak - the kind of trees that have been standing for centuries - with a floor carpeted in moss and leaf litter that muffles your footsteps completely.

It's a walker's spot, no question. The paths wind through the forest in a way that rewards actually paying attention to where you're going rather than just following a marked trail. Dog owners should find it decent enough, though you'll want to keep leads handy during nesting season. History types won't find plaques or information boards here - this is about the landscape itself, the quiet experience of being among old woodland.

The whole walk takes a couple of hours maximum if you're being leisurely about it. No admission fee as far as anyone can tell, and there's no real visitor infrastructure, which honestly adds to the appeal. Go early in the morning or late afternoon if you want it to yourself.

If you're staying at Bourton-on-the-Water Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite nearby, this makes an excellent morning outing before heading into the village proper. It's also close enough to Cotswolds Meadow Glamping for an alternative escape if you fancy something wooded and quiet. Worth a visit if you're after woodland rather than showpiece parkland.
