Lammas Land

Lammas Land sits on the eastern edge of Cambridge, a proper slice of countryside that feels worlds away from the colleges and punts. It's a nature reserve where the River Cam meanders through meadows and woodland, and you'll find yourself on well-maintained paths watching for birds, butterflies, and the occasional deer if you're lucky enough. The reserve spans around 22 acres of grassland and trees - enough to give you a decent walk without feeling like a proper hike.

Walkers will find it brilliant for a couple of hours, especially in spring and early summer when the wildflowers are out. Bird watchers should come with binoculars because the reserve attracts everything from common garden birds to rarer visitors during migration season. It's the kind of place where you might spot a kingfisher if you sit quietly by the water. Families won't be disappointed either - there's space for kids to run around and explore safely, though it's not a playground type of attraction.

Access is free and it's open during daylight hours year-round. Allow 90 minutes to two hours for a proper wander if you're taking your time. The nearest caravan sites - Cambridge Camping and Caravanning Club Site and Cherry Hinton - are both within a couple of miles, making it an easy morning or afternoon excursion during a park holiday. The walking paths can get muddy after rain, so proper footwear is worth it. It's understated and worth the detour if you're after a genuine nature spot rather than a manicured tourist attraction.
