Lakeland Model Village

You'll find yourself peering down at an extraordinarily detailed recreation of the Lake District in miniature form, complete with tiny houses, working railways, and impossibly neat gardens. The Lakeland Model Village sits in Windermere and does exactly what it says on the tin - it's a chance to see what the region looks like from a bird's-eye view, without the two-hour hike up Catbells.

It works best for families with younger children, really. Kids aged 5-10 tend to get genuinely absorbed hunting for specific landmarks they recognise from actual trips around the lakes. Adults find it a bit uneven - the craftsmanship is proper impressive in places, then you spot a wonky chimney and remember you're looking at a model village, not a restored Georgian estate.

Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you've got small ones. It's not vast, but there's enough detail to keep you occupied without feeling rushed. The working model trains are the highlight - they trundle around on schedule and do actually hold people's attention.

If you're based at Newby Bridge Country Caravan Park or Kendal Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, it's a solid rainy-day option when the weather turns. Better as a half-hour diversion between actual walking than a destination in itself, though - you've come to the Lake District to see the real thing, after all.
