Lake Stokesley Grange

The lake itself is the draw here - a proper slice of calm water that sits just outside Northallerton like someone's dropped a mirror into the North Yorkshire countryside. It's the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan for, which makes it all the better.

There's not much in the way of facilities or formal attractions, which is honestly refreshing. You get a walk around the water, some decent bird-watching if you're into that sort of thing, and views across to Stokesley Grange itself. It's peaceful rather than dramatic, and that's the whole point. The banking's gentle enough for families with younger kids, though the paths can get muddy after rain so proper footwear matters.

Really, this works best as part of a broader ramble through the area rather than a destination in its own right. If you're based at somewhere like Whorlton Pods just a few miles away, it's an easy morning or afternoon break from the site. Walkers particularly get something out of it - you can link it into longer routes across the surrounding countryside.

Go early if you can, before the light gets harsh. Late afternoon is decent too. Allow an hour to take your time, longer if you're the type to sit and watch the water do nothing for a bit. It costs nothing and asks nothing of you except to turn up and look around.
