Lagan Park

The Lagan Valley Regional Park stretches across Lisburn and Castlereagh like a proper green corridor, and it's one of those places that rewards you for actually getting out of the car. Walking the towpath alongside the river itself is genuinely pleasant - flat, well-maintained, and you'll spot herons if you're lucky and quiet enough. The park covers around 24 miles altogether, so you're not doing it all in one go unless you're properly committed.

What makes it worth a visit from nearby Hillsborough is that it works brilliantly as a break from caravan life. The walking is easy enough for families with younger kids, though older ones might get restless if you're not mixing it with a proper destination. The river views are lovely without being showy, and there's something genuinely restorative about following water through a landscape that feels properly rural despite being close to the city fringe. You'll pass through farmland and woodland sections that shift the mood throughout your walk.

Best approached as a half-day activity rather than an all-day affair. Spring and autumn are cracking times - fewer midges and better light for photography. The towpath connects several access points, so you can tailor a walk to however much time you've got.
