Ladywalk Nature Reserve

The path into Ladywalk winds through scrubby woodland before opening onto wetland that feels genuinely wild - the kind of place where you might actually spot something rather than just hope to. It's a proper working nature reserve near Atherstone, managed for the birds and insects that use it, not packaged up for visitors, which is refreshing.

You'll find yourself on wooden walkways threading through reedbeds and pools. Lapwings nest here in spring, water voles if you're lucky, and the birdwatching in autumn is genuinely decent - warblers, redpolls, the usual cast of visiting species. The reserve isn't massive, so allow an hour, ninety minutes if you're serious about binoculars. Children tend to find it interesting for about forty minutes unless they're the type who actually care about spotting birds.

Go in early morning or late afternoon when the light's better and the wildlife more active. Weekdays are quieter than weekends. There's a car park at the entrance and the paths are accessible enough, though muddy patches happen. Free to walk around.
