Lady's Edge

The Quantocks rise steeply from the Somerset levels, and Lady's Edge is where you get proper views without the slog of a full ridge walk. It's a forested ridgeline spot near Holford that catches you off guard - suddenly the trees open and you're looking out over the Bristol Channel and across to Wales on a clear day.

You're walking through beech and oak woodland mostly, with a decent path that doesn't require scrambling. The edge itself is dramatic enough to feel like you've earned something, without being genuinely difficult. Takes about forty minutes from the nearest car park, depending on your fitness and how often you stop to mess about with the views.

Families with kids aged eight-plus will manage this fine. Younger ones might find the uphill bits tedious. Walkers doing a longer loop through the Quantocks often incorporate it as a highpoint. History buffs won't find much here - it's more about the landscape than the backstory.

If you're staying at Moorhouse Campsite, barely two miles away, this is your obvious afternoon walk. Even from Haven Doniford Bay, three and a half miles off, it's worth the short drive. The Quantocks are proper good for a park holiday - you get variety without travelling far, and the ridgeline walks beat most of what passes for "peaks" in the south-west.

Go early if the weather's decent. Midday crowds from the car parks can turn it into a bit of a slog, and honestly, that's the only real complaint about it.
