La Aule

The earthworks at La Aule sit quietly in the Hampshire countryside near Alton, easy to walk past if you don't know what you're looking at. This is a Bronze Age settlement - roughly 4,000 years old - and what remains are the defensive ditches and banks that once enclosed a community. It's genuinely atmospheric once you've got your eye in, though you'll need to use your imagination to picture the roundhouses and activity that happened here.

You're really walking through archaeology rather than viewing it behind barriers. That's the appeal and the limitation in equal measure. History enthusiasts will find it rewarding; kids might get restless after twenty minutes unless they're into digging around in the undergrowth. The site doesn't have visitor facilities or interpretation boards, so coming armed with a bit of background knowledge helps.

Getting there involves a country walk from Alton, which makes it a natural add-on if you're already exploring the area on foot. The local holiday parks - Wigwam Holidays and Feather Down Manor Farm are both nearby - make decent bases for a weekend of gentle rambling and low-key heritage spotting. Allow an hour including the walk in, poke around the earthworks themselves, and walk out again.

Free to access, naturally, and there's no particular season that's better than another, though autumn when the undergrowth dies back gives you clearer sight lines across the ditches.
