Knocktaggart

The walk up Knocktaggart rewards you with views that stretch across Dumfries and Galloway in a way that feels properly earned. It's not a bruising climb, but it's not a stroll either - steady underfoot with some real height gain that'll get your heart working. The summit itself sits at just over 300 metres, which in these parts means you're genuinely above the landscape, looking down across the rolling farmland and moorland that makes this corner of Scotland so appealing.

From the top you can see clear across to the Solway Firth on a decent day, and the surrounding peaks give you a sense of how the Scottish Lowlands actually fold and rise. It takes most people two to three hours return, depending on fitness and how long you loiter at the top. The terrain is manageable for anyone with reasonable walking experience, though it can get boggy after rain - bring proper boots, not trainers.

This is the sort of walk that families with older kids will genuinely enjoy, and it's excellent for anyone after a proper viewpoint without needing the full commitment of something like Ben Lomond. The nearest town is Stranraer, which sits about half an hour away by car. If you're basing yourself at Sands of Luce Holiday Park nearby, you've got a crackling little hill walk on your doorstep that beats the usual park entertainments. On a clear day with good visibility, it's well worth the effort.
